Pauline juliet’s Covid-19 relief

Many people in the PJ community live hand-to-mouth, meaning they have no savings whatsoever. They can only afford to eat after a successful day’s work. Because of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, many of these same people were out of work, desperately trying to protect their families from illness and hunger. While COVID-19 cases were initially low in Uganda, many people feared that they would die before the virus ever came to their communities; as many people feared they would die from starvation.

We created an emergency fund for the community to help some of the most marginalized groups in Kiboga and Kyankwanzi during the pandemic. The fund was created to supply meals and bulk items such as rice, beans, and porridge to low income families (with a priority for those with children, disabilities, the elderly, or single-parent households), to provide soap and other hygiene products, to help people pay for medications, to help community members with emergency medical costs, and to help community members with other unexpected emergencies such as burials and immediate shelter.

So far, through the support of our donors, the organization was able to support 125 families with relief packages to last them for at least a month. The relief package consisted of items like beans, posho, matooke, detergent, and other items needed by families. The emergency fund also supported 10 elderly mothers with food and medical supplies. This helped elderly mothers improve their nutrition amidst the pandemic and stay up to date with their medications.
